As of 2004 the furniture industry in Canada employed some 92,810 persons, more than 44% higher than 10 years ago, but almost unchanged since the beginning of this century. The improvement from its 1993 recession low of just 59,559 is truly remarkable. In other words furniture industry employment has exhibited much resiliency, especially considering the impacts the industry faced since the early 1980s from Canada?s free trade agreement. The more recent employment decline is a reflection of the industry?s slowdown due to the strengthening Canadian dollar and more Asian competition.

The rise and subsequent fall affected predominantly production workers. Indeed, salaried/commissioned employees continued to rise during the past three years.

Interestingly, the number of firms in the furniture industry declined. In 1995 there were approximately 2500 furniture establishments in Canada, but a decade later it had fallen almost one-third to about 1700. Medium sized firms shrank relatively more than either large or small firms. This suggests that you either have to be big to compete internationally, or small and flexible to carve out a niche and survive.

As of 2005 the major furniture employer remains the household and institutional furniture and kitchen cabinet manufacturing segment with 61,105 employees or 60% of total employment in the furniture industry. Manitoba is followed by Quebec with 6.3% of total manufacturing employment, well above the Canadian average of 5.2%. The percentage in most other provinces is below the national average.

The average furniture firm in Canada in 2005 employed 55 persons. By firm type the average number of employees ranges from a high of 102 in the office furniture segment to a low of 46 ion the household furniture segment. The furniture industry is dominated by a very few giants and a large number of very small companies. Well over three quarters of all establishments fall below the average of 55 employees. Only some 13% of establishments have 100 employees or more.

The degree of employment concentration has changed somewhat during the past decade, reflecting the adaptation of the industry to increased economy of scale production. Since the early 1990s recession the furniture industry?s real value added grew at a faster pace than employment. So furniture productivity has been growing quickly, no doubt propelled by a compelling need to use more labor saving technologies in today?s competitive environment

Increased automation and the adoption of new electronic and other processing technologies will lead to a continuing shift from low skill to high skill occupations. Shortages for skilled labor in the furniture industry persist to this day. The influx of skilled European labor has dwindled to a trickle, and Canada is not yet producing the required quantity and quality of skills from within its own ranks.

Between the early 80s and the early 90s there was the slight decline in real wages but following the recession in the 90s, there was a modest reversal of that trend. Assuming positive growth of the economy, real wages can be expected to continue to increase in the years to come. Furthermore, workers and managers will need more specialized skills, and such workers can only be attracted by higher pay rates.

The aging of the population will also drive wages to higher levels. The flow of young and relatively inexpensive workers will become less abundant. As a result, industry will be forced to increasingly engage more mature workers, who are invariably more expensive, but not necessarily more skilled, on modern machines. All of which suggests training and will take on added significance in the furniture industry over the decade ahead.

As of 2005 the average furniture industry production employee received $18.52 per hour compared to $20.60 per worker in manufacturing in general. Thus there is a 11.2% gap between the earnings of production workers in furniture and of production workers in manufacturing generally. In 1995, however, the gap was actually much wider at 36.0%, so a noticeable relative improvement in furniture production wage rates has occurred.

Protect Your Furniture Against Environmental Factors

So you have just moved into your new home. Decorated it with new Amish furniture, new upholstery, new electronic goods, new hopes and loads of excitement. Ultraviolet light damages wooden and other organic material furniture. This kind of damage is irreversible. Exposure to less light for a longer period of time or exposure to strong light for a shorter period of time will both cause similar damage and discoloration. The light energy converts to heat energy on contact with furniture surfaces. This rise in temperature chemically causes the polishes or colors to degrade. The wood would then need to be stripped and refinished to restore its previous look.

First of all, let me explain one thing about spots and stains:

- We call spots some unwanted soiled marks on the fabric that does not belongs to the fabric itself and can be easily removed. Spots are more like: - Grease, shoe polish, finger prints, etc.

- Stains are a little more complicated to be removed and most of the times they can not be removed at all. Few stains that can be removed from the fabric are more like: - Food, coffee, juice, wine, beer, water, ink, urine, etc.

- Stains that can not be removed from fabric are bleach; and hard to remove: blood.

Most of spots and stains can be removed if used with the proper product. One very important thing to remember is to pre-test the material first. Here I will tell you how to remove most of the stains out of fabric, and the same process can be used to remove spots/stains from carpet as well.

This is what you need to do first, before you can actually try to remove any spot or stain from fabric or carpet:

- Take an inconspicuous area and make a test first. If you a trying to remove a spot/stain from carpet, go to a closet or a small area under the bed or behind a dresser and try the product you are going to use to remove the spot/stain. Apply a small amount on the cloth and work on the carpet and observe for a color transfer. If you notice a transfer, stop use the product, try a different, a mild one. The same concept applies for fabric, usually under the furniture you will have a small piece of fabric where you will be able to try for color fastness or transfer. If you noticed that the color is been transferred to the cloth stop the process and try something different. Always pre test any product before use them.

Alright, let?s get started:

-Liquid Stains:

1- First blot the stain with a clean cloth leaving it, if possible, on the stain for a few minutes to absorb the most out of it. Keep changing the cloth for a clean one for as long as you see transfer. 2- Then, spread ?Super-Sorb Liquid Spills Absorbent? over the stain and let it stand for about 15 to 20 minutes. 3- Vacuuming the whole area repeating the process if necessary. 4- If the stain persists, repeat steps 1 to 3 until you see no more stain.

-Grease or shoe polish spots:

1- Using ?Buckeye Gum, Tar & Oil Remover? blot a small portion onto a clean white cloth and start working gently on the spot. 2- Repeat the process for as long as you see transfer. But, remember to not over-wet the spot or you can damage the fabric. 3- If possible, do a little each day until you have all the spot gone, this will avoid over-wetting the spot.

-Ink stains:

1- Using ?RESOLVE Spot Magic Carpet Cleaner?, spray a little mist on top of the stain and blot with a clean white towel. 2- Keep repeating the process until all ink is removed.

Note: Most of ink stains require more than one time service, just remember to avoid over wetting the stain, if necessary do it in more days.

-Pet urine stain:

This is something different from any usual stain; you are dealing with many things in here:

- Bacteria.

- Acid

- Sometimes blood.

- Bad odor.

- Body fluid.

So it requires a more detailed procedure and the use of a hand glove. Some technicians use mask because of the products they deal with, in this scenario, you are not require to use mask as our product won?t do you any harm.

1- First blot the stain with a clean dry white towel to remove as much urine you can. 2- Then, spread ?D-Vour Absorbent Powder? over the stain and let it stand for 15 to 30 minutes. 3- Vacuum the powder off the stain and repeat the process if necessary. 4- Using the ?Shakedown Odor Eliminator? spread it over the stain and in the entire area after the stain has been removed. 5- Vacuuming the entire area in the next day.

Note: This process should remove the stain without any problem, if don?t, repeat steps 2 to 5.

Okay so a two-pronged solution:

Save your furniture - apart from shutting your cat out of the house (no chance), declawing (illegal and very painful for the poor cat), what else can you do? There's a couple of things that spring to mind

Furniture protectors - clear plastic strips that attach to the furniture. They provide a smooth surface so kitty's claws slide off, helping to break the clawing habit.

Claw Scissors - these are a small pair of clippers suitable for indoor cats, rabbits and so on. Clipping the ends of your cat's claws regularly won't worry kitty and will help save the carpets from those claws hooking in. Not always such a good idea for outdoor cats as they use their claws for climbing and defence.

Provide 'bonding' material for your cat with Sisal scratching posts, pads and climbers. Sisal is a tough material that can withstand constant clawing and provides the type of surface that cats like to use for their grooming. They're often impregnated with catnip and come with toys attached to encourage your cat to use them.

While the resin is still sticky, a sharp knife can be utilized to remove most of the resin and white spirit can clean the affected surface.

You cannot stop this from happening but you can take some action to limit the effect of the process.

If you would like to maintain the original colour of your furniture for longer, teak oil could be applied once or at most twice a season. This should be applied sparingly with a lint free cloth. This form of treatment will slow the weathering process and could also minimise surface cracks.

In hot weather, cracks may appear in the wood. This is natural and should not worry you. It does not affect the durability of the garden furniture nor the strength of the wood. Cracks will close again once cooler and damper weather returns.

In the sun, you might find that sap will appear on the surface and the sun might cause it to harden. Dousing it in soapy water and then scrubbing it with a hard brush will bring your furniture back to its former glory. Sticky sap can be scraped off and then an application of white spirit can remove any residue. This will help your garden furniture stay looking better for longer.

If you have the space, it is recommended that in order to best protect your wooden garden furniture that you store it inside during the winter. If this is not possible, cover the set with a good quality breathable weather cover, and make certain that the centre is higher than the sides to ensure the rain water runs off.

In the years since the British left the furniture industry in India has evolved. Utility and simplicity gained primacy over art. Price considerations have driven down ornamentation to the minimum, and cheaper wood varieties have come to be used to cater to the huge low cost demand. Yet, in niche areas the old forms of furniture still continue to be crafted. In many places, like Rajasthan, that still has a royal ethos in a Republican India, with its dozens of Palaces?, the old form of furniture making is still preserved. Here, one can take a time travel and find works of an earlier day being crafted with the same expertise. It was the time of the plastic square table, and the austere shelving units often associated with the theme.

Trends change, and the prosperity of the 1980's and 1990's led to a revival of interest in the more stylistic and refined lines and shapes of the past. Often Scandinavian theme furniture seemed more like Mom's furniture as a new generation sought their own expression. The theme declined even in the Scandinavian countries where people began to have a nostalgic feeling for the pre-war themes.

Today, some large retailers sell lines of Scandinavian theme furniture, at least the Americanized version. Older originals are still found in yard sales and flea markets. Strangely, much of it does not make us look hopefully into the future as much as it reminds us of how Mom's place used to look when we were kids. Ah, the passing of generations.

Cat furniture is a commodity that is known by many names. The most common include Cat Trees, Cat Condos, Kitty Condos, Cat Towers, Cat Climbers, Cat Scratchers and Cat Gyms. There are dozens more, but whatever term you use to describe cat furniture, the purpose is the same - to enable your cats to follow their instinctual desire to scratch without damaging your furniture, carpet, or other belongings, and also to give them a place of their own where they can exercise, play, and lounge.

There are many different types of cat furniture, made from such a variety of materials, that shopping for cat furniture can be confusing. Which materials are better? What design is the most stable? What size should I buy? Which style would my cat like? In this article, I'll try to help you answer these questions so you can make a more informed buying decision.

Why Do Cats Scratch?

In order to be completely informed when buying cat furniture, it's helpful to understand why it is that cats scratch in the first place. The primary reason for cats scratching furniture, carpets, woodwork, or other objects is to mark their territory for other cats (this is instinctual, so they will do this even if they are the only cat in the house). Additionally, the scratching helps remove the dead cells from the claw sheaths, and stretches their muscles and ligaments.

Feline behavior is consistent, whether it's a tiger in the wild, or a Maine Coon in a condominium. Scratching is the way they say to other felines in the area Hey, I'm here, and this is my place. Scratching communicates this in two ways. The first is obvious - the scratches provide a very visual cue to other cats. Additionally, cats have scent glands in their paws, which leave pheromones that other cats can smell. For those of you that have experience with declawed cats (PLEASE don't declaw your cats!), that's the reason that they continue to scratch even after the claws have been removed.

Cat Furniture Coverings

In the past, most cat furniture was covered with carpet. This was a good choice, because it looks good, and it offers a material that cats obviously like to scratch. Some of the cat furniture manufactured today, especially hand-made models, still use carpet.

Most carpeting today contains fabric loops. Unfortunately, after thousands of scratches, cat claws can cut through these loops, resulting in unsightly and messy shredding. You've probably seen this yourself.

However, with today's technology, engineers have developed an acrylic material specifically for use in the cat furniture industry. This material, commonly referred to as fake or faux fur, has become increasingly popular. The main reason for this popularity is the fact that it does not contain loops, so it doesn't shred like carpet does, and therefore tends to last longer than carpet. The drawback is that since it doesn't offer the resistance that carpet does when they scratch it, cats don't like it for scratching as much as they like carpeting.

As a result, most cat furniture that offers faux fur also utilizes sisal rope as a covering. Generally, the vertical posts are wrapped with sisal rope, and the platforms and enclosures are covered with the acrylic fur.

Sisal rope is made from the Agave Sisalana plant, which is native to the Yucatan area of Mexico. Cats seem naturally drawn to this material, and unlike the acrylic fur, sisal rope offers the resistance that cats need to tune their claws and stretch their muscles.

Some cat furniture manufacturers that use carpet as a covering also offer sisal-wrapped posts, and in most (but not all) cases cats will scratch on the sisal instead of the carpet.

Structural Materials

Obviously the strength of the cat furniture is provided by the underlying structural materials. Vertical posts are usually wood 2 x 4's or heavy cardboard tubes, while horizontal surfaces are either plywood or pressboard. Manufacturers sometimes use cardboard for enclosure walls that do not bear any weight load.

It is a common misconception that wooden posts offer more structural integrity than cardboard tubes. In actuality, this is not necessarily true. Of course everybody knows that wood is stronger than cardboard when flat. However, when thick (at least 1/4) cardboard is made into a tube, and stood up vertically, it can hold an incredible amount of weight. The addition of a layer of sisal rope wrapped around it adds even more strength. One big advantage of cardboard posts over wooden ones is the weight. Shipping rates are based on weight, and shipping costs for a piece of cat furniture made with cardboard posts will be considerably less than a comparable model with wooden posts.

For platforms and weight-bearing walls in enclosures, manufacturers generally utilize either plywood or pressboard (also known as particle board). Pressboard is fiber pulp that is mixed with a chemical adhesive to create a smooth, uniform board. Plywood is manufactured by gluing thin layers of wood together, resulting in a board that is actually stronger than solid wood of the same thickness.

Generally, plywood is preferred to pressboard for cat furniture platforms for a number of reasons. During shipping, pressboard is much more likely to be damaged than plywood, especially if the carton is dropped on it's corner. Additionally, pressboard tends to crumble around the edges of screw or bolt holes if the hardware is tightened too much. Pressboard platforms are also more likely to break if enough weight or vertical force is put on it, as happens if a child sits on it.

Floor-to-Ceiling or Freestanding?

Cat furniture models will be either freestanding or floor-to-ceiling (commonly referred to as cat trees). Freestanding cat furniture is usually wide and bottom-heavy, to prevent it from tipping over when cats are at the top, or are very active. Floor-to-ceiling models use tension against the ceiling to provide their stability, and so do not require as wide a footprint as freestanding models. A properly assembled and installed floor-to-ceiling model cannot tip over. Usually, the tension against the ceiling is accomplished either through use of a spring-tension rod or a screw-based mechanism. This doesn't mean that the cat tree is screwed into the ceiling. Rather, the topmost post has a threaded bolt, usually topped with a soft protective cap that screws up against the ceiling. Generally, the screw-type cat trees are more stable, especially if you have active cats, and are also less likely to damage the ceiling surface.

So What Should You Buy?

The decision as to what type of furniture to buy for Tabby and Fritz should be determined by a combination of factors:

- Do you want a freestanding or floor-to-ceiling model? This is really more of a personal choice issue than anything else. If you have very active or very large cats, a floor to ceiling model will probably offer more stability. If you have a multi-cat household, special attention should be paid to the weight rating of the furniture. It's also usually possible to secure a free-standing model to a wall with common brackets and hardware available at any home center, in cases where rambunctious kitties cause it to rock or tip.

- Which covering? Carpet offers the advantage of more color choices, and if you're very particular about your cat condo fitting in with your d?cor, this might be your best choice. Faux fur models are generally made in neutral colors like beige or taupe, although there are some exceptions. In either case, having a sisal scratching surface should be a goal if at all possible.

- Structural materials. If you have a choice, choose plywood over pressboard. As for the posts, both cardboard and wood offer good stability. As stated earlier, models with wooden posts are heavier and may cost more to ship.
